How to Grow:

PRE- GERMINATION:

Best way to activate the bulb is to soak them in slowly running water. This pre-germination stage should take place as follows:

Soak or shower the bulbs in water for a a minimum of 4 hours. To maintain levels of oxygen, slow running water is recommended or change water during process. Water temperature should not be warmer than 55F. After this initial soak, soak for an additional 2 minutes in a preventative fungicide.

Once soak is completed the bulbs should be stored in perforated plastic bags or in vermiculite, peat or coco. Bulbs need to remain moist, but not wet.

Store the bulbs for 2 weeks in a 55F and cold/humid room. Followed by 1 week at 42F before planting. Avoid that the bulbs from drying out, KEEP MOIST, NOT WET.

  • Hydrate the Corms

    • Soak the corms in room-temperature water for 4–6 hours to rehydrate.

    • For anemones, you can leave them a bit longer (up to 8 hours) to ensure full hydration.

    • Add a splash of liquid seaweed or a root-stimulating solution to encourage growth.

    • Change the water halfway through soaking if it becomes cloudy.

  • Pre-Sprout the Corms (Optional)

    • After soaking, pre-sprout the corms in a shallow tray lined with damp paper towels, sand, or vermiculite.

    • Cover them loosely and store them in a cool, dark place (40–50°F or 4–10°C) for 10–14 days.

    • Check regularly for small white rootlets, indicating readiness for planting.

Planting Time:

In zones 8 and warmer, plant in Fall for Spring blooms. In other zones, plant in late Winter/very early Spring, about 6 weeks before last frost.

How to Plant:

Preparing the Planting Site

  • Select a Location

    • Choose a sunny, well-draining location sheltered from strong winds.

    • Ranunculus and anemones thrive in full sun (at least 6–8 hours per day).

  • Prepare the Soil

    • Ensure the soil is loose, friable, and well-drained.

    • Amend with plenty of organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve fertility.

    • Test soil pH and adjust to a slightly acidic to neutral range (6.0–7.0).

    • Avoid clay-heavy soils; if unavoidable, use raised beds or containers.

  • Prepare Raised Beds or Containers (if needed)

    • For poorly draining areas, create raised beds or plant in large containers with drainage holes.

    • Fill with a well-draining potting mix or sandy loam.

Planting the Corms

  • Timing

    • Plant ranunculus and anemone corms in early spring for a late spring/early summer bloom or in fall in mild-winter climates for an early spring bloom.

    • Ideal planting temperatures are 40–50°F (4–10°C) at night and 60–70°F (15–21°C) during the day.

  • Spacing and Depth

    • Plant ranunculus corms 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) deep with the "claw" side facing down.

    • Space them 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) apart.

    • Plant anemone corms 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep, with the pointy side facing up or sideways (they’ll find their way).

    • Space them 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) apart.

  • Watering After Planting

    • Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.

    • Avoid overwatering; water lightly until sprouting begins.

Care and Maintenance

  • Watering

    • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

    • Once established, water deeply 1–2 times a week depending on rainfall.

  • Fertilization

    • Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) when shoots are 2–3 inches tall.

    • Apply liquid fertilizer (high in phosphorus) every two weeks during active growth and flowering.

  • Mulching

    • Apply a light layer of mulch to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.

    • Avoid piling mulch directly around the stems.

  • Staking (if necessary)

    • For taller varieties, use stakes or flower netting to prevent stems from flopping in the wind.

  • Pest and Disease Management

    • Inspect regularly for aphids, slugs, snails, and fungal issues.

    • Use organic insecticides or fungicides as needed.

    • Avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal risks like powdery mildew.

When to Expect Blooms:

Fall planted corms bloom for about 6-7 weeks in the early Spring, and Spring-planted corms will blossom for about 4-6 weeks beginning in mid-Spring.

Plant Care Instructions:

Water sparingly once the foliage emerges, and pick the flowers regularly to encourage more blooms. Do not overwater since it may lead to root rot.

Vase life : 12 days
